When I login to an FTP server I can't see any files in the remote window?

Try setting Your FTP Program into "passive" mode proxy. Your connection may have firewall/proxy issues that this could solve. (Or if it is already in passive mode, try turning this off.) For The BulletProof FTP Client You do this by changing your options: in Options | General Options | Firewall make sure "use passive mode" is selected and "Enable FTP firewall/proxy" is unselected.

What is old time radio?

The term old time radio encompasses radio recordings made usually between the mid 1930's through the 1960's.

Goto Top

What kind of shows are available?

There's everything from light-hearted comedy shows through to spine tingling thrillers, quiz shows, variety and more. No matter what your taste in radio shows I'm sure you'll find something of interest to you.

How do I get more credits?

When you run out of credits you can top up your account by going to the Subscribe\Donate Page. Normally Your Account Will Be Credited In Less Than 12 Hours (Normally Way Less Than That During Working Hours 6am to 10pm EST, 7 Days A Week).

Note: When You Use PayPal To Donate That You Make Sure Your E-Mail Address Is Correct. If Not I Will Have No Place To Send Your LogOn Information Only your Old Out Dated Or Disconnected E-Mail Address And That Does Both Of Us No Good.

How many shows are available?

There are currently over 300,000+ files many are old time radio files and there are also newer radio shows available on the FTP Server and this is growing all the time.

After purchasing some credits how long do I have to wait before I can log onto the system and start using them?

Once your payment has been accepted, the webmaster will setup your account and e-mail you your log-On information. Normally this will take less than 24 Hours.

What do I need to download and listen to these shows?

All you need is a computer and some FTP software. If you don't have any FTP software see "FTP Software Downloads".

Goto Top

What exactly is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way of logging onto another computer and copying files directly from that computer to your own machine. To use FTP you will need some FTP software. You can use any FTP software you like.

Goto Top

What is the sound quality of these radio shows?

As for the sound recording quality of the time period when these shows were recorded, all the shows' sound quality is relatively good Some of them I have to admit are rather poor sometimes you may see two copies of a file one may be the same show but in better quality. MP3 bitrates vary from series to series, many radio shows are stored at around 32kps to 64kps, but you will find lower or higher bit rates also.

I'm not a computer expert. Will I be okay with this FTP thing?

If you are completely new to computers you might find FTP a little difficult, but if you know how to copy files from one folder to another on your own machine then this is only a small step further.

Goto Top

Is there a limit as to how much I can download each day?

There are absolutely no restrictions at all. If you have sufficient credits in your account you can download whenever you like and for as long as you like.

What Are ID3 tags?

ID3 Is The Standard Way MP3 Programs Tag Files With Tags Like Artist, Song Name Etc... Most On Till Recently (4+ Years) ID3v2 Has been used in newer tagging programs like Media Center From J River, Dr. Tag, Helium And Many Others. Some Tags May Be Cut Off Or Incomplete Due to the limitations Of ID3v1.1 Of 30 Chars. Per Field. I Have Created a Program to attempt to Find The Date, episode number, and the duration And Store It In The MP3 filename If Found, Like:

The Format That I Use On This System Is:

1943-03-09 (0355) - (07m07s) - Fibber Mcgee - Visiting The Dairy.mp3

Meaning

YYYY-MM-DD (Episode#) - (Mins, Seconds) - Show Name - Episode Name

There Is No Standard On How OTR Collectors Do This But The Current Way Most OTR Collectors Store The Date Is 430309. The problem With This Way Is You Will Not Know The Correct Date For Early Recordings On Records. So I think It Is Always Best To Include The Full Year.

What happens when I run out of credits?

All that happens when your credits run out is that you will no longer be able to download anything. All you need to do is go to the payment page to top up your credits. You may need to wait up to 24 hours until the webmaster credits your account.

Goto Top

If I don't use my account for a while will my credits disappear?

Your credits will remain on your account for up to six months without you using the service.

Goto Top

What happens if I need some support?

If you need help feel free to send me an e-mail.

Goto Top

Can I burn these shows to CDRs, audio CDs, or audio cassette?

Yes! You can burn the shows to CD as either MP3 files or as audio if your software has that capability. For cassettes a cord can easily be plugged into the back of the computer audio out and then into a tape recording device play them on the computer or MP3 capable CD Player and press record on the cassette player.

Goto Top

Can I use my 56k modem or do I need broadband?

You can use any kind of connection to the Internet. Obviously, the higher speed your connection is the faster the shows will download. On a broadband connection you should be able to download a show in just a few minutes whereas on a 56k modem it will probably take between 20 and 30 minutes per show.

How Many Credits Do I Have?

Sample: The User Refreshed The Current Directory Note The Text Line Displayed In Red Below.

Current Credit For This User Is 1024MBytes = 1 Gig Or "1,073,741,824" Bytes.

Note: Some FTP Sites Give 1 Gig As "1,000,000,000" Bytes. There Maybe Other Sites That Give "1,073,741,824" Or "1,000,000,000". Both Are Correct But It Is Something That You Should Be Aware of. SpartaRadio.Com Gives "1,073,741,824" Per Gig.

Note: FTP Commander (Free Version) Does Not Allow You To See The Log Information You Will Need To Ask Me. The Free FileZilla FTP Client Works Better.
